Piling Supply
Southern Pine is a natural renewable resource, and the South is growing its fourth generation of forests since this country was settled. The United States has about the same amount of forest area today as 100 years ago. Ninety percent of the timber piling in North America is Southern Pine, grown on managed timberlands and produced into piling in the Southern and Eastern regions of the United States.

About 75% of Southern Pine production is pressure treated with CCA and about 25% with creosote. While there have been changes in the use of CCA for the consumer market, CCA remains approved for use by the EPA for piling as an industrial product as well as for utility poles, building poles, agricultural fence posts and other uses.

About nine or ten percent of piling produced in North America is Douglas fir. There is very limited use of other species for piling. For information on Douglas fir piling, refer to the Western Wood Preservers Institute web site.
